Terence has been in practice on the Island for nearly 30 years and until 2004. He was noted for his work as a criminal defence and human rights lawyer. Latterly he has concentrated on commercial and corporate law for which he has built up a fine reputation. He is very conscious of the cost of law and tries to avoid formal litigation and looks for practical solutions for what are often complex legal problems.
His present fields of expertise cover company and general commercial matters including shareholders agreements and the sale and purchase of businesses. He has particular expertise in corporate governance which is also a subject upon which he lectures.
In addition, also undertakes private client work in employment and matters concerning property (commercial and resident) including conveyancing, leases, land disputes.
Terence is also known as an academic having lectured on numerous business legal subjects and has been commended for his teaching by those studying for the Chartered Institute of Secretaries qualification and the International Finance and Administration Diploma.
He holds degrees from three Universities, a Bachelor Degree in law as well as the Degrees of Master of Arts (MA) and Master of Laws (LLM) – the LLM being in corporate governance and international law. He is also a Fellow of the Chartered Governance Institute, and a Notary Public and Commissioner for Oaths Terence was for several years a member of the Isle of Man Law Society Council. In March 2020, Terence was the proud recipient of The Isle of Man Law Society’s Deemster Kerruish Endeavour Award having built up a great reputation in practising law over almost 30 years and being a valued member of the Isle of Man Law Society.
He has recently been awarded the degree of “Master of Philosophy (MPhil) for his research Thesis entitled “The Manx Bar – The History and Development of a Unique Legal Profession” (Barr Vannin Shennagha as Aase Lughty y Leigh – Er Iheh)
Terence has been recognised by the Legal 500 for 2025-2026 as a ‘Recommended Lawyer‘ for commercial property matters.
