On 31 January 2021, British National (Overseas) (BN(O)) status holders from Hong Kong were provided the opportunity for them and their family members to live, work and study in the UK. The Isle of Man runs a parallel British National (Overseas) visa scheme that went live at the same time as the UK BN(O) visa scheme. The Isle of Man BN(O) visa scheme is a lesser-known alternative in a low-tax jurisdiction that not many Hong Kongers are aware of.

Since the UK BN(O) visa scheme’s introduction on 31 January 2021 to the end of March 2024, there have been a total of 173,543 out of country applications and 164,969 grants of out of country visas[1]. By contrast, since the Isle of Man BN(O) visa scheme’s introduction on 31 January 2021 to mid-November 2024, it has received 30 applications and approved 26 applications for further leave to remain.

The Isle of Man is a separate country from the UK, a Crown Dependency, and is part of the Common Travel Area with the UK, meaning there is no border check between the UK and the Isle of Man. A holder of the UK BN(O) visa can freely travel and live in the Isle of Man without having to apply for a separate further leave to remain, and can also switch to the Isle of Man BN(O) visa scheme.
