MannBenham’s Candy Chan achieves IAPP AIGP Certification, strengthening the Firm’s AI governance expertise

At MannBenham we are delighted to announce that on 9 September 2025, our Senior Associate and Trainee Advocate, Candy Chan successfully obtained the Artificial Intelligence Governance Professional (AIGP) certification, awarded by the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP). This achievement reflects MannBenham’s commitment to excellent legal services that anticipate the challenges of new technologies and evolving regulation.

The AIGP credential is one of the first globally recognised qualifications dedicated to AI governance. It demonstrates expertise in the responsible design, deployment, and oversight of AI systems, with a focus on ethics, accountability, and compliance across international frameworks, not just one jurisdiction. IAPP is the world’s largest association in privacy and data governance, already known for global certifications like CIPP in privacy law, CIPM in privacy management, and now AIGP. This cutting-edge global qualification equips Candy to advise clients on both the opportunities and the risks associated with AI.

Candy is one of the first legal professionals in the Isle of Man to earn credential in AI governance, and she does so with a strong foundation in litigation and advisory work. She formerly practised as a barrister in Hong Kong and is also qualified as an English solicitor. Her litigation experience and governance expertise enable MannBenham to provide comprehensive advice to clients, covering both proactive risk management and dispute resolution.

The timing of this development is particularly relevant to the Isle of Man. In April 2025, the Chief Minister said that the Isle of Man is considering a comprehensive AI strategy for the Isle of Man, including developing its own AI rules and regulations instead of adopting those from the EU. In September 2025, the Government announced the creation of a National Office for AI Development and Regulation by end of the year to coordinate how the Island develops, adopts, and regulates AI. Manx businesses that are EU facing will already have to understand the scope and obligations under the EU AI Act because it has extraterritorial application. As businesses and public bodies prepare for new regulation for the Isle of Man in addition, there will be an increasing demand for practical, forward-looking guidance in this fast-moving area.

MannBenham is uniquely placed to support clients in navigating AI governance, understanding the differences between emerging Isle of Man regulations and existing global frameworks, ensuring compliance, reducing liability, and building trust in the responsible use of AI.
